Irrigation involves a gentle jet of body- temperature water which is directed into the ear canal to soften and loosen the wax. An ear tank is held underneath the ear to catch the water and wax which is flushed out. This is essentially a quicker and more efficient method; however, is not suitable for everyone. This is determined on the consent form you will fill out prior to your appointment.
Microsuction involves the use of a small probe, which is gently inserted into the middle of the ear canal, using the guide of a speculum. It works using gentle suction to remove wax blockages under direct observation with ‘loupes’; binocular glasses fitted with a bright light to maintain direct vision into your ears at all times.
This is a water free, safe and effective way to remove excess ear wax.
In rare cases such as foreign objects having got stuck in the ear, these micro forceps may be used gently to remove them. They will be inserted into the canal centre using a speculum, and the object slowly removed.
